Possibilities
Do you ever wonder about what your life could be if you chose to go down a different path? Maybe you chose to pursue one career over another. Or you followed your dream at the expense of moving away from your home.
My song, “Possibilities,” is inspired by the idea that when we make a choice in life, it means that the possibilities and outcomes of different choices are now gone. This song is a funeral for all those opportunities that could have been pursued but died once a path was chosen. I wrote this song as a way for myself to mourn all possibilities that could have happened, but didn’t get a chance at all.
Dundurn and King
“‘Dundurn and King’ is the prettiest piece of social commentary out this season. So pretty the melody entices you into checking the painful side of what Clements is laying down.” ~ BTW This Week
Farmer Song
This track centres around the story of a son contemplating whether or not he is willing and even capable of taking over his family’s farm from his father.
This tune was inspired by a song prompt while I was taking a six-week songwriting course taught by Canadian country singer-songwriter, Lori Yates. At its heart, “Farmer Song” represents the feeling of being torn between two paths.
The son wants both freedom and autonomy, but is scared of losing the shared reality and connection to his family. I think that many of us can think of a time in our lives when our meaning and purpose looked different than our families’, causing confusion, fear, and maybe even shame.
Memories
In the opening lines, “When I am quiet they become so loud, thoughts and memories just floating around”, singer-songwriter Mary Clements sets the reflective mood of her new single, Memories. “This song is about those quiet moments when all of your thoughts just appear in your mind like a movie, whether you are inviting them in or not,” she explains.
