Welcome to my first music newsletter! First of all, THANK YOU so much for subscribing, I saw each and every one of you who opted in with your email and I felt so many warm fuzzies and it gave me great motivation! While I was fully prepared to write this post to 3 people, (my mom, my dad and my friend Chris who sets up my website) it’s so amazing to know you’re all here!
So much has happened to bring us to this point that I want to share but I thought I’d simply start by talking about the inspiration for my first single’s cover art, which is a painting I did of my car. The follow up question to this is usually: who paints a picture of their car?! And the answer is… this gal! I actually painted this picture long before I even wrote this song and people then too, thought it was very peculiar. Why paint a picture of a 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe?
This car picture is so significant to me that I felt inspired to paint it because it reminds me of 2 big milestones in my life:
- This car was my first big purchase (besides university) and I felt so proud that I bought it for myself
- It was taken on my first solo camping trip to Killarney Provincial Park, in Sudbury, Ontario.
became friends with them and discovered they lived in Dundas (I’m still friends with Leah and Richard!), biked along a country road, saw bears on said county road, drove down old dirt road trails, got scared that I was going to get a flat tire on those dirt roads, went back to normal roads and more! Sudbury was also the farthest place I had ever driven by myself at the time.
When I look at the my car painting it reminds me that “ I Can” which is why it has decorated my work spaces since and why I wanted to make it the album art for my first single. Now as I share this with you all, I hope it reminds you of a time when you went out of your comfort zone to do something that you knew would make your feel proud of yourself and happy to be you!
Speaking of amazing firsts and feeling proud, last week something amazing happened! I got to hear my song for the first time on the radio on 9.33 CFMU on my friend Kristin’s radio show called I Heart Hamilton! It was such a thrill! It’s on every Friday from 2pm-3pm and it showcases Hamilton with an emphasis on the local arts & culture scene – music, art, comedy, food, shops, events & more. To hear a recording of the show that I was in last week, click the picture above.
Thank you so much for being here! Until next time, xoxo, Mary 🙂
